My Sculpture

Image
'Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.' Michelangelo. On 30th Street in Boulder, Colorado, there is a sculpture of a man chiseling himself out of a block of stone. His head, torso, arms, and thighs have already been carved from the stone. His right hand holds a hammer above his head ready to strike the chisel which he grasps in his left hand. He is forming his right knee. The sculpture represents both the present state and potential of a self-made, self-actualised person. To reach our human potential the hammer and chisel will need to be used often and with diverse levels of precision and purpose. Some of us will place the hammer and chisel on the ground and declare ourselves, 'finished' while others will keep the tools close to them, ready to perfect their sculpture, change aspects of their sculpture, make it more beautiful, sincere, authentic. Some of us will see the block of stone as motionless while to oth...

Healing Words.

It's a mad world, we all need to be strong, we need to look out for one another and ourselves. Here are some words to help you through these dark days when wars rage, politicians are crazy and you are wondering what on earth is going on.   I am safe I feel grounded. I feel connected to Mother Earth. My roots are deep and strong. I believe in myself. I am strong. I am brave.   I am a creative soul. I easily find creative solutions for all the challenges. I honour and accept my sexuality. I feel excited and passionate about the things I do.   I am a confident being. I have strong willpower. I believe in myself. I trust my abilities.   I am a being of love and light. I can forgive myself and others. I am kind to myself. I am kind to humans, animals, insects, plants and trees. I am an honest person. I can convey my feelings. My ideas matter. My opinion matters. I can listen and honour the opinion of others.   I am a wise being. I have an innate ability to look beyon...

Progress is not Inevitable.

Image
After Mr Trump claimed victory over Kamala Harris, Mr Sadiq Khan, the London Mayor, said he understands, " many Londoners will be anxious" and " fearful about what it will mean for democracy and for women's rights." " The lesson of today is that progress is not inevitable." "But asserting our progressive values is more important than ever- re-committing to building a world where racism and hatred is rejected, the fundamental rights of women and girls are upheld, and where we continue to tackle the crisis of climate change head on." Well, I couldn't have put it any better myself, so I painted a picture.  The feeling of the morning after, the disappointment, the bewilderment, the worry, are all reminiscent of the Brexit vote. Yet. there is a difference. It could simply be that I'm older, world weary maybe? I look at the world as if I am not in it, I look at people and wonder who they are, where do they get their beliefs, what do they ...

Trump. How to Deal with Donald.

Image
So, here we are, about thirty days later. Thirty days of blustering and blathering and bullying. What else did we expect?  Does anyone know what on earth goes on in the mind of this man? I don't. I know that I don't like him, have never liked him. Intuitively, I think he's a wrong 'un and my intuition is usually spot on. I am very unlikely ever to meet him, I don't want to ever meet him but I'm curious to know more about him so I've done some astrological digging and written his report card. Here it is: Donald Trump. 14 June 1946. Queen's, New York. Sun in Gemini: Thinks he is rather good at expressing himself and boy does he like to express himself, noisy, rambunctious, he can be a disruptive influence in certain settings where a calm demeanor would be much more suitable. He can be difficult to control. He is easily bored and has a tendency to change his mind and his moods. He is not easily intimidated and this means he is quite difficult to get close to...

Welcome 2025

Image
I would like to welcome everyone who reads this blog. I don't know who you are but my stats show me that you are spread across, France, Iran, Singapore, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Russia, the US and the UK. I would love to hear from you, wherever you are. As my life progresses so my every day activities change. A lot of my time now is spent looking after my elderly father. He is eighty eight and a half ( this is how he describes his age) and is in reasonable health although his mobility is severely limited. Almost without realising it, I have become his main carer. He can no longer drive, walk any distance and cannot manage stairs very well, his knees are very painful and his bones creak. Yet, he's quite happy. As long as he can have his fire blazing and the television on, is fed and watered with various beverages and is allowed to moan endlessly about the government, then he's content. One might presume that dad and I have always had a close and loving relationship and my loo...

Musings

I have always loved the Greek myths, this is my interpretation of Persephone and the pomegranate seeds. At the moment I am reading, 'Mythos' by Stephen Fry,  but I also have  'The Greek Myths' by Robert Graves on my desk. Stephen Fry is much easier to read and is quite fun. Anyone interested but not after a degree would be wise to choose Fry. I actually painted this picture a long time ago and I still like looking at it, which is unusual for me as I am prone to 'improve' my art work which is sometimes a good idea and sometimes not, for some reason Persephone has remained original. At the moment Persephone is 'above ground' and thoroughly enjoying herself with her mother, Demeter. The six pomegranate seeds in the painting represent the six months of the year that are spring and summer, or the six months of the year that are autumn and winter. You'll have to read up on Greek mythology for the full story. Maybe it's my love of the myths that keeps...
